You could say we are just unknowing weenies, but it's actually a tad worse.
The crime we have committed - allowing ourselves to trade nature's health for our desires, is why we never hear from the future. We were no doubt annihilated somewhere along the line for being totally corrupt, unclean, and rapacious predators of the first order.
