ly chose to abandon their property because their ability to make any money became nil - all the wealth of the empire was inside of huge estates - many of them literally stretching for miles. Eventually - due in large part to the things you listed - the Roman Government was forced to buy its armies from abroad because 'citizens' could care less about both financing and participat
ing that which was destroying them.
