TV SoundOff: Sunday Talking Heads

We all know that progressive democrats ultimately cannot stand up for Social Security because the financing for their next campaign would disappear. Wealth calls the shots and there's no legal way around it anymore - unless and until the left acts on the realization that moral imperatives can drive around the law.

When it comes to ethics, it's hard to get lower than these critters without doing something really nasty and illegal, but they're workin' it. Tea-brow is the new low-brow, and Tea Party leadership is about working for the decline and fall of democratic government and the supremacy of money - without letting on. If we want the American middle-class to survive the decade, they should all be chased back to their red-state burrows like rodents!

John McCain: I Debase My Wife To Win Your Vote

The Great Toy Man

A more disgusting display of slippery, political cowardice would be hard to find in a man. Decent, committed human beings are involved in this issue and they are being treated poorly. The grouchy bomber from yesteryear should get on the stick and lead the way to honor in all of this, but he won't - he doesn't need to. McCain's got his trophy enchilada - and that suits him to a tea.

Who Will Stand Up to the Superrich? - NYTimes.com

Who Will Stand Up to the Superrich? - NYTimes.com: "That’s a good question, all right, but it’s not the question. The bigger issue is whether the country can afford the systemic damage being done by the ever-growing income inequality between the wealthiest Americans and everyone else, whether poor, middle class or even rich. That burden is inflicted not just on the debt but on the very idea of America — our Horatio Alger faith in social mobility over plutocracy, our belief that our brand of can-do capitalism brings about innovation and growth, and our fundamental sense of fairness. Incredibly, the top 1 percent of Americans now have tax rates a third lower than the same top percentile had in 1970."

It's the big story for all those now starting out their working lives in America - it means you must pick a new goal, because the middle-class can not exist in the new environment.

Anis Shivani: Bush's 'Decision Points' Is A Terrifying Journey Into the Authoritarian Mind

Anis Shivani: Bush's 'Decision Points' Is A Terrifying Journey Into the Authoritarian Mind: "The beauty of the Bush philosophy of governance is that it creates and accelerates those very conditions of stress (radical economic inequality promoted by tax cuts for the wealthy and concomitant cuts in public services for the less well-off) that then provide fertile ground for popular acceptance of measures intended to further worsen conditions for the subject class..."

"..Bush truly was a transformative president, among the rare few, and we deceive ourselves -- as many in the commentariat continue to do, as with Maureen Dowd's light-hearted mockery of him -- if we consider him an anomaly, a rare eruption of a virus that won't repeat itself. This book's ideas will have resonance with a large segment of the population, and a notable number among the elites; we need to study Decision Points (Crown, Nov. 9) seriously, as onerous a task as it may be, if we are to make sense of the perpetual aura of crisis that has enveloped America, and why we seem to be stuck on a self-destructive path.

Decision Points is a classic recipe for a benign dictatorship, a uniquely American form of dictatorship, to be sure -- from its rigid understanding of morality (good versus evil) to its distorted valuation of life (only American lives matter; Bush is not concerned about the loss of civilian life in the countries he attacked) -- that gives comfort to many in a time of economic and cultural stress."

Texas Observer Exclusive: DNA Tests Undermine Evidence in Texas Execution - The Texas Observer: "Had the DNA tests been conducted before his execution, Jones might still be alive today. Scheck says these results, had they been obtained 10 years ago, probably would have led judges to throw out Jones’ conviction and grant him a new trial.
“I’m convinced that [Bush] would have granted this reprieve had he known about it,' Scheck told the Observer on Thursday. 'I find it just astonishing that he wasn’t told. That’s a pretty serious breakdown in the criminal justice system.'"

Shoot the cow with 310 million tits

Debt Commission Member Rejects 'Right-Leaning Plan': "'While I think everyone on the commission agrees that we're on an unsustainable path, we cannot be putting the deficit or the debt on the backs of ordinary people, particularly senior citizens. When we started this commission we said nothing is going to be done to benefits for current beneficiaries. Lo and behold, the proposal by the two co-chairs would lower the cost-of-living adjustment for all beneficiaries, something that would compound over the years to significantly lower the benefit for future beneficiaries. They're talking about raising the retirement age. None of the offsets they talk about would be helping lower income seniors. According to the experts, this proposal would put more elderly people into poverty, not fewer. And that is just a nonstarter."

Book By Winner Of Biggest Canadian Lit Prize Unavailable In Stores: Publisher Refuses To Increase Production

Sorry, that's not anywhere near enough perspective. If this kind of printing is a chokehold on an author's career, then it is not of value to authors. But the print publisher is not the artist we are concerned with here - it's the author. The print publisher does not do honor to anything by selecting its worth over that of the author. Both crafts could be served by simply thinking it through and proceeding properly - but so far that seems absent.

I totally agree that "there still is a place for continuing debate on man's influence on this planet." The background assumption is that nature has a big enough pool filter to deal with whatever we throw at it. I don't think either of us believes we should bet the kids on that assumption. GOP Climate Change Deniers Running For House Energy Committee

I'm a caustic numpty, sorry, but let me just mention this. I am a fan of Roman history - a fanatic might be closer - and decades ago I was studying information on core samples from the northern European glaciers, in which was info about the industrial/societal emissions of the Roman era, the medieval era, so on, and - though this was not my mission - I couldn't help but see the changes through subsequent centuries. What was startling to me was the incredible increase in industrial emissions beginning in the early 1800s and escalating to huge levels (the curve was frightening!). There was no comment about the meaning of this information in the material I was reading, and I believe these samples only went up to about 1955(?), but the data was staggering and I couldn't help but wonder how long the world could take this onslaught of waste without a plan to deal with it. The Chairmen: New House Leaders Have Familiar Ties to Business, Revolving Door

There a school of thought that says America is not great by dint of its special brilliance, but from its citizens' plundering of a geologic pile of riches, on a heretofore never-ending trail to a law-free horizon. Today is life at the end of that trail, and we are ill-prepared to acknowledge where we are and who we have become. These men we 'chose' to vote for don't even exist - they are just fleshy things that do the bidding of wealth and power.

When I was young I eagerly awaited the publication of a wildly anticipated 'Great American Novel' - promised often in the decades following WWII. But, it never came to exist. Clawing for spoils and booty from a kill site is an animals endeavor, not an achievement of human souls. The great American story turned out to be merely the call of greed.

When we become better at being human we might deserve a great book about us.

Although looking at the sky is to actually see the past, it's all gone nonetheless The wide-open space of the past is all gone - we've come to the garden wall. There are no more deserted islands, lost paradises, or escape hatches. This is our world; I need your carrots and you need my bread, so we have to learn how that's best accomplished. That's what we've been doing for 6 thousand years and we can't give up now - especially since we all now know that nobody is to spare - everyone is a living soul that we cannot abandon without losing ours. Researchers find a ‘liberal gene’ | Science Blog

Researchers find a ‘liberal gene’ Science Blog: "Hitler’s beliefs align most closely with the Progressives of the West prior to his rise to power. You’ll find, if you dig, that his views and those of Mussolini, were close to, influenced by, and lauded by Western Progressives"

Righties are always looking for this thread.. but it doesn't exist. The right in America was pro-Nazi; the progressives were not.

Homeowners Get The Boot For Bad Paperwork While Banks Get Millions For Same

Homeowners Get The Boot For Bad Paperwork While Banks Get Millions For Same: "'I paid $250,000 for something. It's worth $150,000 today. There's a second lien on it of $50,000, and a first lien of $200,000. What do I do?'

'And the first thing I'd ask them is, 'Is it non-recourse debt?' And if it's non-recourse debt, I have an answer. If they say, 'Yes, it's recourse, but I'm broke', then okay. Now we have the facts.'

Kaufman and Caldwell discussed the second lien issue. Kaufman noted the 'reluctance of some financial institutions to extinguish second liens because they're carrying them on the books at 90 percent of value.'

'It seems to me the only reason that they're carrying the second liens is because they don't want to write them down because they're carrying them at 90 percent of value, and they're worth nowhere near 90 percent of value,' he added.

'You know, that particular thing we hear a lot,' Caldwell said. But, she noted, those second liens 'continue to be current.'

Experts outside the firms holding and selling second liens uniformly say there's no reason for a homeowner to keep paying their seconds if they're delinquent on or struggling with their primary mortgage.

The administration would never concede that point, though. Neither would the nation's biggest banks. A deal is a deal, after all.

'For those who are concerned that somehow there's something morally suspect about restructuring loans, I should note that every day on Wall Street the people of power and privilege in this society restructure their debt,' Silvers said. 'It is commonplace for everyone but the poor.'

'As people have noted,' Troske explained, 'we are at a point where... house prices are worth less than they were. Banks need to write that off, and of course, people need to write that off as well.'"

The 'working-class' has been duping itself for decades with the assumption of membership in something called a 'middle-class'. Drop their income a small amount and they financially spin out of control., soon realizing the fact is that they are people doing what they are told in order to survive past the end of the month - nothing more substantial than that ties them to society.
