In my current understanding of the evolutionary process, those female primates whose breast size remained unchanged by fertility throughout the year, gave males no definite information about seasonal fertility, and therefore attracted the male all year round, making it possible for the female's increased safety and protection during child rearing - especially for offspring whose increasing brain size after birth required longer periods of dependence on the mother.
