Again and again and again we read of the soon to be complete eradication and extinction of the marvelous creatures known as the Mountain Gorillas, yet we all know that we will do nothing about it; we will devote outrage and sneers only; not solutions, because we won't really do what could be done and what needs to be done.
We are the shameful species.
We all know what will happen. The Gorillas will go silently, and it will be duly noted with a 3 or 4 paragraph story at the bottom of page 2 of the New York Times, with small pictures of Jane Goodall, Charles Darwin, and the front of the Intelligent Design Museum - where the flag will be tightly at full mast.
"For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the Earth."- Henry Beston
