This same argument was used in the Great Depression by Republicans trying to block the New Deal: "We can't help people with these programs because it will hurt them in the long-run." The only problem with that arrogant meanness is that people don't eat in the long run, they eat every day! Standing aside while people are seriously hurting is not something I can do. As soon as I was old enough to throw up, I knew that Republicans don't represent anything I find ethical or valuable.
